NBA: Early season predictions Part 1

By Peter Wells (twitter - @boxingsaddler):

With so much to look forward to and so much to indulge in throughout the course of the next 6 months it seems odd to already be looking ahead to the playoffs. But despite all the excitement that is sure to flow in the regular season, in the NBA its all about the playoffs.

It seems that this years playoff race may be extra special too, with so many new faces flashing around the league, opinions on who will make the top 8 in each conference will differ greatly.

So why have I waited over a week into the season to make my prediction, well its given me a chance to see all 32 teams in action, and already we have been offered some unexpected results. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Philadelphia 76ers are off to flyers, while the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls are taking a little longer than expected to warm up. Suddenly the final 16 playoff teams I envisioned a week ago has changed, not drastically but it has indeed changed my perspective.

Who will lead their team to the top, LeBron(left) or George(right)
Now to kick on, here are my teams I predict to make the playoffs this 2013-14 season:

Eastern Conference

1st Miami Heat

It doesn't feel such a foregone conclusion this year with the return of Derrick Rose and the sudden rise of the Indiana Pacers. Still its hard not to see the growing depth of Coach Spo's squad head the top of the East once again, and with LeBron James looking to improve once again on his MVP season they are hard to bet against. They have already suffered a few tricky moments and sure enough they'll meet many more obstacles along the way, but when Miami perform at their best, it seems that no team in the NBA can get the better of them.

2nd Indiana Pacers

Quite simply the Pacers are Miami's biggest threat in the East, there size and versatility gave LeBron and co fits last season in the Eastern Conference finals. With a 5-0 start the Pacers are clearly improved on last season and with Danny Grainger set to return later in the season (he'll be back a long time before the playoffs start) they are now one of the front runners for the NBA title, and Paul George has begun the season in MVP form. They don't have many weaknesses but depth may be one of them, but the 5 starters are as good as any in the NBA this season.

3rd Chicago Bulls

Just how important will the return of D-Rose be for the Bulls

Despite the return of D-Rose, I still see the Bulls as quite a way behind the top two in the East. That has already been demonstrated this season, suffering loses to both Miami and Indiana, and quite conclusive loses at that. Joakim Noah, Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng are as tough a front line as you can get, and they don't lack in quality either. Bulls will win a lot of games based on defence just like last season, but with the return of Rose they have a game winner at the other end.

4th New York Knicks

Thus far they don't quite seem the team they were last season. Carmelo Anthony is lighting a spark but he's not on fire like he was all of last season. Bargnani will no doubt bring something from the bench and JR Smith's return from suspension will be most welcome, but while they'll more than comfortably make the playoffs, its unlikely they'll make the same waves they made last season.

5th Brooklyn Nets

For me it'll be the same top 5 this season as last season, and there's a good reason for that. The Nets have added Garnett and Pierce to an already good roster, but its far from exceptional. Depth is once again a thing they lack, and sending Kris Humphries and Gerald Wallace the other way ensures they haven't added much to the bench that wasn't already there. Nets have been on and off this season in the opening week but a win over the defending champs shows they are to be taken seriously with the big boys of the East.

The acquisition of Jennings(left) & Smith(right) should help
Detroit back to the post-season

6th Detroit Pistons

It should be a welcome return to the playoffs for the Pistons, as Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings are added to the starting line-up. Andre Drummond has been showing signs of how good a centre he can be and expect him to find plenty more openings to up his scoring average this year with 'J-Smoove' in the front court. With Jennings they have a good passer and a game winner, it also adds to their depth having the always effective Will Bynum on the bench.

7th Philadelphia 76ers

This is where the selections get hard, and its likely the gap between 7th and as far as 10th/11th will be less than 8 games. This should make for a dramatic final month in the East, something that has been lacking in recent seasons, where the top 8 have been quite easy to predict. For me Philly's start has been convincing enough to say they can make a push for the playoffs. The loss of Jrue Holiday looked to be disastrous but Michael Carter-Williams has taken the NBA by storm, a historic debut against the Heat suggests he is an early favourite for Rookie of the year.

8th Atlanta Hawks

This was a real toss-up between the Hawks and the Cleveland Cavaliers but despite not having a real star player in their team, Atlanta have a solid set up and their big line-up will help them to possibly sneak into the playoffs.

The rest: 9th Cleveland Cavaliers; 10th Orlando Magic; 11th Toronto Raptors; 12th Charlotte Bobcats; 13th Boston Celtics; 14th Milwaukee Bucks; 15th Washington Wizards

Western Conference:

1st Oklahoma City Thunder

Westbrook(left) & KD(right) make OKC a title contender
The return of Russell Westbrook has been a huge boost to OKC and already he is back as good as ever, exploding from his Point Guard position, ripping through the lane at every given opportunity. Kevin Durant will no doubt be looking to finally win an MVP and get one over his biggest nemesis, LeBron James. With the San Antonio Spurs conserving Tim Duncan and the Clippers and Rockets showing plenty of defensive lapses, its hard to look past OKC for the number one spot, but I doubt they'll end the season with the best record in the NBA.

2nd San Antonio Spurs

If there's one thing that the Spurs do its win, somehow they just manage to win. With good depth every game they'll find someone to go to, or it'll be a team effort to win the game. Defensively they are the best in the West and one of the best in the whole of the NBA. Their peak at the right time approach though will keep them from seriously challenging OKC to the very end for the top spot.

3rd Golden State Warriors

The ever improving Warriors seem to have picked up where they left off in the regular season. Boasting arguably the best backcourt in the NBA, they are looking good to be one of the top teams in the West. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are so key to their offense and at least one of the two enjoys a 20+ night every game. They were a surprise package last season but they wont be this season, and likely they'll finish exactly where they deserve to be.

Howard(left) looks at home in Houston with James Harden(right)

4th Houston Rockets

Already it seems that Dwight Howard has found his perfect home, his connection with fellow All-Star James Harden has been instant and the Rockets are living up to the hype. Defensively though they are still missing something, but for now they're brilliant offense will be their scapegoat.

5th Los Angeles Clippers

With the best Point Guard in the league, Chris Paul, the Clippers are going to enjoy years of playoffs over the next few years, but thus far they have not been able to emulate neighbouring Los Angeles Lakers when they get there. It's likely the Clippers could be the only LA team in the playoffs this year, and while they have the best scoring offense in the league, they also have one of the worst defences. At least it could possibly make for a first round playoff match-up to remember.

6th Dallas Mavericks

After a rough year last season the 2011 NBA champions have all the tools this year to make the playoffs. With Monta Ellis and Jose Calderon in the backcourt they have scoring and assists at abundance, and Dirk Nowitzki should be reaping the rewards. Still the gap between themselves and the top 5 is quite big but with Utah Jazz, Lakers and Denver Nugget's big struggles they look good odds for a respectable playoff position.

7th Memphis Grizzlies

Despite a rough early start the Grizzlies are a team that loves to play to their strengths, and through that good frontcourt the likes of Mike Conley and Jared Bayless have flourished. Although their standing in the playoffs will be further down than they have been used to in recent seasons, they should comfortably make the playoffs in a season that will provide more highs than lows.

Kevin Love(right) is back and ready to take the
Timberwolves to the playoffs

8th Minnesota Timberwolves

Although they will be close run by the Portland Trail Blazers, their depth will be key to piping a team that has a poor bench output. Behind the brilliant production of Kevin Love and Kevin Martin the Timberwolves can put recent struggles behind them. Barring the injuries that struck their season down last year they can make the playoffs, and will no doubt be a team to keep a keen eye on.

The rest: 9th Portland Trail Blazers; 10th Phoenix Suns; 11th Los Angeles Lakers; 12th New Orleans Pelicans; 13th Denver Nuggets; 14th Sacramento Kings; 15th Utah Jazz

NBA 2012-13 season review

By Peter Wells (twitter @boxingbrains):

After a sensational season, where Miami Heat went on a near record breaking run and season destroying injuries were at the forefront, at the end of it all Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs served up one of the greatest NBA playoff Finals of all time. LeBron James & co were victorious in a heart-stopping 7 game series.

What magic took place in those 7 games will stay with those players and fans forever; from the sensational block by LeBron on Tiago Splitter, to the incredible season saving trey from Ray Allen with 5 seconds to play in game 6, to the heart breaking missed lay-up by Tim Duncan in game 7. Every moment is engraved in the minds of those fans watching.

Without the explosiveness of D-Rose, the Bulls back-up Point Guard Nate Robinson dished up the bad, the good and the ugly all by himself, while Paul George stepped up for Danny Grainger, leading the Indiana Pacers to the Eastern Conference finals.

Lob City was lobbed out by the Memphis Grizzlies, whose first Western Conference finals left them mopped up by the Spurs brush. The strain on Kobe Bryant could not be relieved by Dwight Howard, whose Kryptonite was exposed in cruel fashion.

Once the season ended the usual culprits prepared for the scrutiny that awaits in the playoffs.

In the East, the Heat set alight Brandon Jennings and the Milwaukee Bucks, while the Hawks failed to breach Indiana's home court. The Celtics battled hard, but no heroics this year as Melo and the Knicks looked favourites to re-ignite their rivalry with the Heat. The Nets couldn't follow the home court suit as they lacked the passion of the short handed Bulls.

Over in the West drama ensued as Westbrook's injury left KD on his own. But Durant took charge and the Rockets went home. The Kobe-less Lakers were humbled in 4 by the determined big three of the Spurs. The Nuggets incredible season ended abruptly at the hands of the 3-ball machine Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. The Clippers and Grizzlies battled it out once again, but this time CP3 had no answer to the all round effectiveness of the Grizz.

Back to the East and the Heat's long wait proved fatal in game 1 vs Chicago. Their shots were off and the Bulls took home court advantage. But in the end an injury/illness hit Bulls were offered no sympathy from a Heat side that had only one thing on their minds. A championship!

While the Heat waited again, the NY Knicks and the Pacers went head to head in a tense series. But once again the Pacers proved untouchable at home and a win in NY was all they needed to swoop through in 6.

While the Miami Heat & Indiana Pacers were set to square off, over in the West, Oklahoma City Thunder finally faltered without Russell Westbrook and the Grizzlies headed to their first Western Conference finals.

While the Spurs were firm favourites the Warriors went in with a plan. They took home court advantage, but their inability to hold a lead in the final quarter was punished severely. The Spurs struggled but eventually they were rid of the energetic Warriors.

The Conference finals were set and while the Grizzlies were swept in the West, Miami and Indiana fought tooth and nail to the very end.

In typical Heat fashion, they quickly lost home advantage. But that came after a dramatic buzzer beating lay-up from LeBron to snatch game 1. In game 2 behind George, Hibbert and West the Pacers knotted the series at 1-1.

Coach Spo's feisty Heat showed their bounce back abilities in Indiana to dominate game 3. The back and forth war continued as after 6 games they were tied at 3-3. Final game in Miami. Behind a solid team performance, the Miami Heat took game 7. For now LeBron could keep the haters at bay.

The final commenced in South Beach. A tight game ended with an incredible fade away jumper from Tony Parker to snatch home advantage away from Miami - yes, there's a theme developing here.

Game 2 and the Heat responded, but the Spurs were three games away from their 5th NBA title, all three taking place in San Antonio.

Game 3 was all Spurs, before the Heat pulled together and silenced the home crowd in game 4. The series was all level at 2-2, and Miami had home court back.

Game 5 was huge, as was Danny Green, who set a new record for 3 pointers in the NBA finals. Back to Miami, where the Heat needed to win. Their season, their legacies were on the line.

A late rally to end the 2nd quarter left Miami 6 points down. Then with LeBron and Wade off target, Spurs silenced the American Airlines Arena when they took a 13 point lead late in the 3rd.

The pressure of the whole world was on LeBron's shoulders. Nothing he put up was going down, and there was no one else the media would blame if Miami failed to rip through this 10 point deficit in 12 minutes.

Tim Duncan couldn't miss and Tony Parker had taken over, yet Miami fought back. LeBron lost his headband, Mike Miller lost his shoe and suddenly Miami were soaring to a remarkable elimination game comeback.

Miami were ahead but the tide took another drastic turn. Miami lost their edge and the Spurs took back the advantage. Then came two untimely turnovers from the man bearing all the glares, LeBron James. The look on LeBron's face told a thousand stories. He could already see the following mornings headlines, and none of them mentioned Spurs winning the championship, they were all stating how LeBron James had lost it.

Ginobili went to the line, hitting 1-for-2. A 5 point game with 28 seconds to go. LeBron took the ball, threw up a 3... off the rim... offensive rebound.... back to LeBron... hits it!! On a second attempt James had cut the San Antonio lead to 2.

After an intentional foul, Leonard was next to the line. Like Ginobili he was 1-for-2, giving Miami the perfect opportunity. 3 point game!

LeBron with the 3.....missed!!!!..... rebound Bosh....out to Allen.......HE NAILS IT!!!!!!!

Ray Allen, the greatest 3 point shooter of all time had just tore up the next mornings headlines and sent Miami into pandemonium.

Off to overtime and Miami took the lead, and with poor offensive plays from the Spurs and a few incredible blocks by Chris Bosh the Miami Heat had WON game 6! Incredible!

The heartbreak of coming so close will haunt the Spurs and their fans for a long time to come, but all their energy had to be focused on game 7.

Game 7 followed suit with the incredible series, as the Spurs and the Heat went back and forth all game. Then with Miami ahead by 2 in the closing minutes, the face of the San Antonio Spurs, Tim Duncan missed a relatively easy lay-up and could not convert the ensuing tip in. Neutrals, Spurs fans and even Heat fans hearts went out to the legend as he slumped in his seat during the next timeout. Pain and frustration etched all over his face.

With a slender disadvantage, the Spurs went to the unpredictable Manu Ginobili. The veteran made an impact, but sadly for San Antonio it wasn't the impact they hoped for. Horrible turnovers cost the Spurs in the final stages, and Miami Heat could celebrate championship number 3!!!!

So that was it, I know writing about it can never bring back the array of emotions that this season brought. But hey, for now lets just continue to re-live those best bits. You never know maybe next season will be even better. I really hope so!
